Ok, I have a generation 5 Toyota Camry and I just recently put in GR2 struts and H & R springs. Everything is great except the front left tire. When I go over bad bumps in the road, there is a rattling noise coming from the suspension. We tried greasing it up to cause less friction (when I say we, I mean the shop). They also put a rubber piece between the strut and the spring which is standard on the stock suspension. On the bottom part of the spring there is a plastic like covering. Could that be making the noise or is it something else? And also, they said that it's not dangerous with this rattle, but just an annoyance. What do ya'll think? Is it safe? Now I want to get it fixed, so do any of ya'll have suggestions about what it could be?
Thanks for any help!

Does the rattle occur during bumps? If so, try this:
1. Retorque the three strut mount bolts on top (not the center bolt). If it still rattles, then:
2. Retorque the center strut retaining nut (I think to 36 ft/lbs). IF it spins instead of torquing correctly, the strut has not seated correctly and is causing the rattling. You will have to remove the whole strut, compress the spring, and reseat the upper strut mount, making sure that the flats on the strut piston bar line up with the strut mount.
3. Check the stabilizer bar bushings...are they deteriorated?
4. What did the shop "grease"? New strut mounts come with bearings that are already lubed. No need to grease any part of the strut/spring assembly.
5. Pull the tire and look for a loose/unconnected stabilizer bar link (where it connects to the strut). Also check the torque on the strut bolts where it attaches to the steering knuckle. Many shops leave this critical part untorqued correctly (155 ft.lbs)
BTW, the KYB GR-2s are a good match for the Camry. Firmer than OEM, yet retains the smooth ride.
thanks rlee i will get the shop to check out these possible solutions. i'll let ya'll know what happens....but for the ride IT IS AWESOME loving the sportier feeling. i can take curves better than i used to be able to

The Gen5 Camry/KYB GR-2 combo does give a nice ride with excellent handling. Straightline stability is also improved. Best improvement I have made on my 2003 LE.
hmm, weird, I kinda have the same issue too. A minor thunk sound on some bumps on the front left(drivers side) after changing my springs to S-techs (on OEM struts) myself. And it's already aligned.
