Thermo housing

I had a leak coming from the thermo housing on a 97 Camry. Took the two nuts off and the gasket looks fine.

Thermo works fine too. Is it leaking just because it needs a new gasket?

Just buy a new thermo and leak should stop?

Thanks!

Edit: Anybody know the torque specs on those two little bolts?

I can look up the torque later, but you have to see where the leak is comming from

Is it between the waterpump and thermostat housing (gasket / oring, etc.)

Or from the black part itself, not along the pump and housing?? (Cracked housing)

Is this 4 cylinder? -- I even reuse gaskets on T/S when stuck - no stock I have never had trouble eXCEPT - boroke off the upper stud -- We managed to drill out & replace with a through bolt. Suggest you tighten by hand & see if leak persists. Then tighten a little more if there is a problem. Chilton says 78 in-lb on 4 cyl & 53 in-lb on six

It seems to be coming directly inbetween the thermostat housing and where the black hose mate up. The nuts where not loose.

I got a new gasket and thermo (since I was in there). Going to test the thermo first (to make sure it works) then install.

I'll let you know.

Thanks.

^ So I take it that its leaking around the radiator hose? Where the hose mates to the thermostat housing.

If so, have you tried using a new hose clamp? In which case the hose is not sealing tight enough around the thermostat housing or the thermostat housing is cracked.

I'd pull the radiator hose off and check the thermostat housing, if you haven't already done so.

If the thermostat gasket was bad and leaking, it would most likely leak inbetween the thermostat housing and water pump housing. In other words where the thermostat housing bolts to the water pump housing.

I put the new gasket in and the leak stopped.

It took a while to burp it and I feel it is still running a tad cool.

I drove around the with the radiator unlocked for a bit and that got most of the air out. Air blows hot, but I think I can get more. Maybe the rest of the air will work itself out over time.

Thanks.
