Gen5 OEM Windshield?

dealer wants $470 to order an OEM windshield for my 05 camry. but the aftermarket price tag is including installation and mold would be around $290.00. do you really need the OEM or can you get by with aftermarket from one of the major producers?

The dealer is probably going to bring the car to a glass shop for the repair, quite possibly the same one you would use!

If you ask me, I would go for the original. There may be differences that are not apparent, some glass are stronger and better quality. Also the tinting might be different as well. You have a GEN 5 which is still a very new car. I personally would go for the original. If you take it to the dealers, they may take it to a glass shop but they would install original Toyota glass. Just to be safe, you can alway ask to make sure. Have it in writing before they proceed with the work. Toyota glass has the toyota logo, or the word toyota on it of course.

i would go to a glass shop that has a good reputation. No need to pay the dealer all that money just for the winsheild to have a toyota logo on it.

are replacing because of a chip or a crack?

go with the aftermarket. The standards for glass is pretty uniform all across the board. Just make sure you use a reputable company. If you do go to the dealer they will ahve a mobile glass company come in and do the actual installation. IT will be Toyota glass but the dealer, most of the time, does not install windshield glass. IF you can find out who actually makes the glass for Toyota you could even call around to see if you can find the aftermarket version of it. Just looks on the stickers and see who the glass was made by. It should say Toyota on it and then another name for the company that manufactured it.

If you do go with an aftermarket one, look for USA made ones. A few good brands are PPG, LOF, and Carlite.

Got mine done through Novus Auto Glass - went through the Insurance company and paid just the deductable, which is much lower than what you'd pay for out of pocket. No, my insurance rates didn't increase because my windshield got hit with a rock and needed to be replaced -- so no worries there.

They installed OEM glass with "TOYOTA" stamped right on it, same as the original. If you have a Novus in your area, give them a try - they give lifetime warranty too and that's always a plus.

Good luck

roger that. Toyota Dealer said they will order the OEM glass from Kentucky, or from AP Tech, who makes the glass for Toyota. their price tag for the windshield is +400.00, then $200 for installation and $60.00 for the molding. wow. i called a company that does the repair work for the same dealer and they qouted me $300 for everything using a good quality aftermarket glass from one of the top 3 aftermarket glass makers.

Maybe car insurance is different in the States, but doesn't your car insurance cover this and you just pay the deductible??? For example, my deductible would be $300 bucks for something like this.
