Overheating Engine Damage??

Hello,

This is my first post. My friend has a 1994 camry V6. Tonight, the radiator blew and the driver proceeded to complete the trip home. Engine Oil Temp. guage was peaked for atleast 15 minutes. Just prior to him shutting the motor off, I noticed an audible sound coming from the valvetrain. Approximately how much damage could have been done?

Thanks.

He is lucky he didnt seize the engine. Just check all seals and gaskets.

Not good! You will almost have to get coolant in it and fire it up to see what it does. Could be just about anything(head gasket, warped head, cam bearings, etc.

Not good at all.

From what you've said, it sounds like the engine is gone. Pinging and grinding is definitely not good.

Not much you can do, other then open up the motor and see what kinda damage there is.

Don't know what the person was thinking, still driving it with the temp pegged.

SHort of riping the engine apart when you get a chance pul the oil pan off and look for metal shaveings. If there are its time for a new engine

our 85 civic took a dump when my dad decided to pull the same stunt. I'd definately check the oil pan first. If the camry doesnt have a prefilter thing (you can probably see any damage looking into the oil cap area).

yeah. I felt pretty bad. I told him repeatedly that there was a serious risk of seizing his engine. It seemed he disreguarded my comments to the fullest potential. oh well.

first step is to get a new radiator. then see what happens.

I'd refill the coolant (plain water should work for a short run test) and check the engine before spending money on parts. I wouldn't spend any money until you know what's broken and have decided what your next steps are going to be.

yeah it makes sense to pull over when the temp gage is pegged and the engine is pinging and grinding and what not. Just goes to show you that it payees to know about the workings of an automobile and how to properly care for one in certain situations.

What good is a new Radiator, the motor is blown. If the engine sounded like a WRX, it needs a new motor.
