My car is really running sluggish right now and just needed some input on what you guys thought it was. I have a 94 5sfe, 115000 miles BTW.
The symptoms are:
-Reduced engine power
-battery light and rear brake light indicater light are lit on the dash
-this morning coming to work, clock was so dim I could not see it and I was practically flooring the accelerator and car would barely move...also wipers were slow as well as windows, and when turn signal was on tach and speedo needle were bouncing
-also, in the past few months, I have been getting 50 miles less per tank
I changed the coil in my distributor last winter and it started soon after that
Did I get my timing off or is my alternator just going bad???
All help would be greatly appreciated,
Ballz

Your batters is bad or you need a new alternator. If your speedo is bouncing like that then there is defiantly not enough power to run the rest of the cars electronic systems. Just check your alternator and get a new battery.

I doubt it is the battery b/c I am running a red top optima....how do I check the alternator?
The timing would have nothing to do with the fact that your speedo wont even work with the blinkers on....it is defiantly something with the electrical system.

disconnect your battery wile the engine is running......if it stalls then you need a new alternator.
lol your car's going to stall if that happens regardless of whether you need a new alternator or not. My car runs beautifully, with no electrical issues whatsoever, but the second that the terminal popped off my battery (shitty Chicago roads, terminal not tightened down well enough), the car stalled like nobody's business. I think it's a safety mechanism built in by Toyota.

^^ x2
my dad was taking my car to the mechanic for me and i guess i didnt have the terminal tightened enough and it popped off while he was driving on the highway thankfully he was able to get to the shoulder. stupid mistake on my part
yeah i meant with the alternator disconnected. That way you can see if it even runs without it. If it does the battery is good. If it doesn't the battery is shot.

SOunds like the alternator. The ony thing wierd is you say the rear light indicaotr is on. Normally on Toyotas if the alternator goes out the battery light and the brake light will come on not the rear indicator.
Everything you are explaining sounds more like electrical problem than timing. You can take the car to jsut about any autozone or similar store and they will usually tes the alternator for free. They have equipment to hoiok up to it to test it.

Do you have a multi-tester, or a volt meter of some sort (even an old gauge will work)? Check the voltage at the battery with the car running, it should be between 13.5 and 14.2. Any less (or more) and you need a new alternator.
My money is on the alternator.
