Idle when air conditioning is on

What causes the idle to increase when you turn the air conditioning on (1990 Camry)? What ever it is, it isn't working and my wife is complaining.

Theres a a/c idle up vsv (vacuum switching valve).

Its mounted on the firewall, left (passenger) side of engine bay.

Has 2 hoses running into it.

Is this also the case for the Gen5 Camry? My I4's idle drops down low when the AC is on.

^ Probably. However I can't say for sure, since I've never worked a gen 5.

I haven't had time to tinker with my gen5 since we got it, but I doubt it

since everything on the gen5 is drive-by-wire, it's most likely ecu controlled

Seems plausible. I can't find anything that looks like an a/c idle up vsv on my Gen5. If it's in the computer, I wonder how you'd adjust it (as a shadetree mechanic). When my AC kicks in, the idle drops a couple hundred rpm. It doesn't stall, but it's annoying when sitting at a light.

i was under the impression your idle may drop a little anyways...unless your computer can adjust for the increased load on your alternator etc.

I have never seen an idle increase in a car when the a/c was activated, but i havent been in THAT many cars before...

All of the cars I've owned previously that were equipped with AC kicked the idle up a bit when the AC was active. The Camry was the first one that didn't.

I think the gen 5 idle is supposed to drop a few rpms when u turn the A/C on. I know that mine drops like maby 100 rpms and runs a little rougher when the A/C is on. I am prity sure it is normal unless there is a problem with mine as well?

On all cars that I have driven, when the AC is on, the idle changes. There is more draw to the altnerator. I think this is normal and there is nothing to worry about.
