exhaust flexi pipe

Hi all,

My 99 Camry LE, (California emission) has a hole in the exhaust flexi pipe. My local mechanic told me he can fix(replace) the flexi pipe alone for $200 or replace the front pipe with the catalytic converter with an after market one for $ 500. I called the dealer. He told me the front pipe with cat cost around $1200.

I am confused. Should I go for the fix, after market replacement or the OEM replacement ?

I appreciate any inputs.
Thank you

have you try any mufler shop, they normally cut the pipe at flex and weld a new one back for less under $200. the cat converter probably still good, don't need to replace with a new one.

thanks for the input,

That is exactly what my local mechanic told me he will do. But he wants $200 for cutting the part out and welding in the new flex pipe. Let me call few muffler shops and get their quotes.

Hi drgphilip,

We had our flex-pipe replaced at 115,000 miles in 1998 at a cost of $233 by the dealer. The flex-pipe needed to be replaced for the second time just recently at 188k miles. Due to the lifetime warranty, the entire repair, parts & labor, was at no charge to us. The warranty covered the total cost of $288.

Check out the following link:

Hope this helps,
