Camry shaking violently

I've got a gen 3 1996 camry, 5sfe engine. When I turn the car on, I get a ton of shaking from the car, plus I noticed that the engine idles at 500 rpms. I have oil leaking from underneath the engine somewhere, but I want to know what could be causing this, because the car's been sitting for 5 years, and I have no idea what's causing it.

Thanks.

- mike

if its been sitting for 5 years, i think you should drive it around the block a few times so the ecu can reprogram itself. if it stuill runs like garbage look into doing a tune up.

also, dont forget to put in a fresh tank of gas! syphon out the old stuff thats been sitting in there.

For sure get rid of the old gas! It will gum everything up and possibly cost you a valve job at a minimum.

it could be a whole lot of different things after sitting for 5 years

wires, distributor, plugs, sensors, old gas, clogged injectors, etc etc

do a full tune up first

Thanks for the responses!

I want to know if the 96 camry has a plug on the fuel tank so that I can dump it into a tank, rather than mouth siphon, I've never done that, and don't really want to.

Go to the parts house of your choice and see what they have. You can get real cheap siphons just for this purpose. Something like an accordian style pump (plastic) with some tubing. Do the fuel filter also.

It's been sitting for 5 years. Where? In a indoor garage or outside? You may have corroded spark plug wires. Check your spark plugs and spark plug wires, distributor, etc. I would recommend changing all your spark plugs.. the tips are probably all corroded.

Yes, dump out the gas. Change the fuel filter (probably clogged). The gas will probably have some water in it now. You can actually get additives to help remove water from the gas. BUT remove as much as gas possible from your tank. Then I would fill up the tank and add the additve to remove moisture from the tank.

Once you've solved the problem, you will also need to change ALL the fluids in your car. Yes, ALL the fluids. Tranny, brake, coolant, power steering, engine oil, etc. It will be costly, but I would do it.

Once all is okay and all fluids are changed, drive the car in the highway and rev the car a little harder than normal. You want to burn out any contaminates in the engine system, fuel lines, and clean out the cat, exhaust system, etc.

I'd also check the engine mounts to make sure they're still good

Yeah, it still cranks. It was just being stored in a garage. But yeah, it started without changing anything but the battery and radiator fluid.
