2nd Generation AT Shift Selector Dash Indicator Panel

Hi All,

Not all the shift positions on the AT shift selector dash indicator panel light up when selected:

P R N D 2 1
Norm PWR O/D Off

R, Norm, O/D Off do not light up. All other selections do illuminate.

Previously we had to replace the neutral safety switch, as the back-up lights would not turn on when R was engaged. If I remember correctly, replacing this switch also caused other gears on dash indicator panel to illuminate that were previously dark 100% of the time.

Are the 3 that currently do not work, typically a matter of:
- Light bulbs?
- A circuit board - the dash indicator panel?
- Or something else?

Thanks!

I know on the Gen 3, they are light nulbs for each one. If they all went out at the SAME time, I'd say circuit board. If they were seperate times, I'd say just the bulbs.

just go to the junkyard and grab a few of the little indicator boxes like in the previous post. they're cheap and you'll have plenty of bulbs on hand just in case they burn out.

sounds like a fuse or lose connection... they're all indivudual lights no way for them all to go out at the same time

Usually D and Norm bulbs are burning out first.
Also,
on AISIN produced indcator boards the printed circuit tracers are losing conductivity where they go from one to other side of the board (these points look like dots with miniture hole in the center). I fed a strand of wire through these holes and soldered it to the tracers on both sides. This fixed P and N indicators. Before that, either P or N indicators were glowing together with R indicator, in P or N position respectively. When R was selected, all P, R, and N were getting dark. It turned out, that the common ground path for these three lights was interrupted and back-up lights circuit served as an alternative ground when P or N were selected. In 1989 different indicator board was installed on some cars and the lamps from it will not fit into Aisin type board.

Hate to bring up old threads but this is all I've been able to find with my problem. Neutral safety switch works fine. I've got another from the junk yard and it's doing the same thing. Normally from a completely cold start, the p r n d indictator lights will work for a few seconds but then the p and r and r and n will be combined together when selecting park and neutral respectively.

I'm wondering how to fix this, Doctor J? It has to have something to do with the dash itself like you stated. When I select r normally all lights will be off.

You may want to check my post @:
http://autorepairswithdoctorj.blogsp...-of-shift.html

it shows which points you may want to jump on the board. Hopefully it will solve your problem if your board looks similar to the one on the pictures

So basically I'm going to solder a wire through that hole from one side to the other? Do I need to expose the line of the path using sandpaper, or should I just solder the wire to the board through that hole from the one side to the other as shown?

Can I just swap a board from another gen camry?
