Hi guys, do I have to change my oil every 3,000 miles? If I, do that I then have to change it every 6 weeks because I drive alot. What happens if I don't change it every 3,000 miles? What happens if I just change it every 4,000 miles? Is it a good idea to flush it? My car is over 100k miles. Thanks
relax, generally oil is rated to 5,000 miles, its just better+safer to change it earlier.
read the oil container.

If you don't change it at EXACTLY 3K, your engine will destroy itself.
KIDDING!!!!
It's just the longer it stays in your engine, the crappier it gets. Thicker, burnt motor oil with REDUCED viscosity which INCREASES the stress on your engine, giving it more work, slowly robbing you of some MPG and a little HP/TQ. Who wants sludge motor oil in their valvetrain and crankshaft?
Have your motor oil analyzed and they can tell you whether the oil can be run longer.
You should be safe changing it every 5000 miles or perhaps even longer. But to be sure, you should have the oil analyzed. The analysis will tell you if you can safely run the oil longer than 3 or 5 thousand miles.
i got my oil changed recently at 156k miles now its at 161... and funny thing is, around 158,900 miles, i put in an engine aditive called "Zmax" my dads used for years and we've seen insane gas mileage readings from it, and i just got back from a 15 hour trip from northern utah, avg speed of 75mph at 2800rpms, and i got avg 33mpg... which is interesting, because we did that and drove through the mountains really running the rpm's up close to 4k rpms... because before at 69/70mph, i got 33mpg (when i hadnt used zmax for a good year) and one time a few years ago my dad took a 11hr trip going 70mph non stop, and calculated 38mpg!!!
and funny thing now is, the oil although needs to be changed, runs better than it did when i got the oil changed... maybe its the zmax... eh?
the bottle says 15,ooo mile intervals, I do it at 10, ooo Does that help?
my current miles is 117, 000 roughly, at 125,000 will be my third time changing on this interval.
I'm using Mobil 1 synthetic and mobil 1 filter... and yes, the bottle clearly states 15k changes and full synthetic.
But like someone else said, you don't know how long you can go unless you do a test. I don't see anything wrong with you switching to 5k intervals, I'm not sure 10k because that's the owners perogative.

its fully up to the owner. It really does depend on how you drive, the wheather and what oil you use. You dont only just change it due to kilometres done. If you do alot of city driving, ie lots of starts and stops, you would "normally" change it every 5000kms, if its mostly highway driving aroudn 7000-8000kms. My parents usually change it like 10-15000kms at the stealerships when they go in for regular services. their cars run like shit in a few years but its not gona full screw your car up.
