My dad's 3rd gen had that coming from the back of the car and it turned out to be a suspension problem. I don't remember what exactly was wrong with it though, sorry.

could be as simple as worn swaybar bushing or costly as struts and mounts.

that's what happens to my 2001 gen4.5 with 16800mi. the wierd thing is it only makes that sound in the morning only ONCE after i back up, go forward for about 1 second...klunk from the back. sounds like somethings loose. i guess this happens to a lot of cams.

bushings and mounts for me. I am waiting for the mounts when i change the shocks. bushings though tend to make a lot nastier and louder sounds than the mounts imo.

How much were the bushings to replace? And who makes aftermarket bushing for Gen3 Camrys?

This klunking noise on my car is getting frustrating.... only happens when it's cold, I've had the shock mount replaced with a new one and the noise is still there, so I'm assuming that it's the shocks and/or bushings in the front that are making the noise....anyone have any other ideas what might be causing the noise?

Ok....according to my mechanic, there was a strut mount problem in 1997+ models of the Camry and ES300. If you have a Gen3 (1991-1996), the strut mounts rarely ever went bad. I had the strut mount changed on my 1996 (Gen3) and the noise is still here. It was $150 (CDN) for the part new from Toyota. Get a through inspection from your mechanic BEFORE buyng anything. I've heard great things about my mech, but he changed the strut mount right off the bat and nothing happened, so make sure that all possibilities are brought up by your mech (worn bushing, old struts, even shifted springs).

BTW, I still have the klunking noise, and I'm down to only two possibilities, so I need to know who makes aftermarket bushing for a 1996 Camry LE just in case it's the bushing that are causing the noise.
