Canada Check Engine Light (again!!) O2 sensor

Hi Everyone,

I've got a 1997 4cyl LE with about 94000km (57000 mles). About 5 months ago, the check engine light came one and the code was P0136 02 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank I Sensor 2). This is the O2 sensor located under the driver's seat right after the CAT. The dealer had diagnosed it and I paid for the O2 sensor to be replaced (big $$$).

Yesterday, after 5 trouble-free months, the check engine light came on again and this time I had my own obd2 code reader and was surprised to find the same P0136 code popping up again. Could a new sensor fail in just 5 months with only about 5000km (3000 miles)?

Any advise what could be the problem? Thanks.

Dennis

If it is the same code I would take it back to the same dealer. Here in the states the parts are guaranteed for 1 year.

As a side note I replaced the same sensor on my 98 Camry 4 cylinder XLE at about 70,000 miles. 97,000 miles now and the sensor is still fine.

Thanks Mike. Yes, I am planning to bring it back to the dealer, since they only recently did the O2 change. My only concern is that they might end up saying that I need another expensive O2 sensor, which I don't think is the culprit this time, and I may have to argue my case here. Maybe the wiring between the sensor and the ECM is bad?

Has any one else had recurring O2 sensor issues?

I agree with you on checking the wiring. The connector is under the driver's seat where the carpet covers the floor heating duct for the rear seat passengers. You might want to inspect it yourself and even disconnect the connector and inspect it looking for some form of corrosion. If you find corrosion there, some WD-40 makes for a good contact cleaner.

3rd Generation

If you go back they should probably fix it for free. Check your work order from last time. My general mechanic also gives 6 months or 6000 miles warranty to their work.

You can also tell them what you think.

If the code is the same, then the problem is probably the same.

I have a 6 cyl, and was getting o2 sensor codes. Ended up changing both sensors in the front to clear everything. Funny thing though, I think that I can trace my o2 sensor failure to my addition of a SRAI.
