3rd Generation P0770 - Tx Flush Q

Hi guys,

Check engine light came up today-P0770 - Malfunction in shift E Solenoid

People who have had this problem have had success with flushing the tx fluid

which brings me to the question flush or drain refill?

I can drain the fluid ,add 2 quarts of valvoline maxlife tx + seafoam trans tune

(or)

I can flush the thing out

WHAT WOULD YOU GUYS DO?

this is 96 LE with 155K

Tx condition:I dont have fine tuned ear for diagnosing tx,but I will try to be accurate

Tx has a slight harsh shift.TX does not seem to slip in gears, and I have
never had any cold weather issues(but Im in KY,so...)

I used to drive a 92 rolla' before and I have had rougher shifts before.

The only diff that I noticed was how when shifting between gears the Tx
seems to ease off the power and come back on.This never happened on my rolla.

tx fluid is brown, smells like petroleum product.

Thanks,
Keba

I would flush it ever so gradually. Because it has a lotta miles and assume it has never been flushed before unless you know otherwise. If you do a whole full- on flush it can knock loose too much crud and mess up your trans. So use no solvents or anything other than trans fluid, recommended kind of course.
Just remove the drain plug, drain out whats in there and replenish. Then drive a couple hundred miles and do it again, repeat once or twice more. Then on the last one remove the pan and clean the strainer and hopefully your trans will keep working.

hey thanks.

The light went out today.

I think there is some crud in one of the solenoids which got loose.

The car makes sort of a Hrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmmmm noise once in a while .I dont know if this is also from the trans.

I am going to drop pan ,clean out the filings, see if I can get into the valve body and clean that out too.

How hard is it to get to the solenoids and valve body?Do I need any special tools?
