Help oil leaking.

Well i changed my oil and oil filter on my 96 Camry LE (V6) and now it is leaking like crazy. When i was dumping the old oil into a coffee can i noticed a washer in the bottom of the can so i looked at my drain plug and it was one of those bolts that already have a washer build around it. So i didn't but the washer on. Well the car was leaking oil so i drained it all out and put the washer on the drain plug hoping that it would stop the leak. Well it didn't. It doesn't appear from what i can see that it is leaking from the filter either but it might be because i can't see the bottom of the filter. So my question is were does the washer go? Do i leave it on with the build in washer on the drain plug or do i take it off. Also i was searching and some people said there is a gasket that you change when you change your oil and filter. What are they talking about. Oh yea could some one give me a diagram of the area around the oil filter.

Thanks

Your first step is to find out where the oil is coming from. I'd assume that 1) you didn't get the old seal off from the old oil filter, and now you have two gaskets around it, which would casue a leak, or 2) the new gasket on the oil filter is seated improperly, if at all. Those two are assuming the leak is coming from the oil filter.

If the oil is leaking from the drain plug, i don't know what to tell ya, usually those don't leak unless they're so loose you can unscrew them with your fingers.

get you a couple of cans of brake cleaner and spray everything off where it looks like oil may be coming form. Then start it up, make sure it is full of oil, and see if you can determine where it is coming from.

It sounds like maybe the gasket that was on the drain plug needs to be replaced. You should really try to replace it every other oil change or so.
