Hey all. I'm getting a car while I'm in Japan, since I'll be here for 3 and a half years. I'm talking with someone about a 96 Subaru Legacy Wagon. Non-turbo, 4wd, looks good, drives nice. Anyone know anything about these cars? He's offering me a really great deal if I can get the money to him in time. Anything I should look out for?
There are a few pics in my photobucket, along with some more pics of Japan, for those interested.
Just remember that cars in Japan are worthless so like its that car is worth $5000 here its worth $1000 there. The car tax and emissions for older cars increase alot as it gets older. Its Japan's way of keeping less cars on the road and controling emission polution. If he didn't give you a "good deal" then it would have been scraped and he had to pay $500 to scrap it. They even scrap 5 year old Ingetra Type Rs with 40k miles. But yeah, the car is good, just old for Japan.
Be careful in your choice, I have seen some messed up subaru engines with low k's on them. Alot of blown head gaskets etc. Get a hold of a camry if you can :P
Good luck.

The price he is asking is $1500, and it has 142km on it. It's in really good condition, and everything seems clean on it. Only problem is that it has a small hole in the exhaust, but that's easily fixed at the auto hobby shop. From what I've seen, everything looks and seems to work well!

142Km = 100k miles? Thats a good price, maybe you can get it lower. Just beware that inspection and taxes would be more then the car.
i dont know if this suby has the 2.5 motor, but i think that is the motor known for bad head gaskets and lifter taps. just my 2 cents. other than that, they last forever.
if your in the AF, i'd just buy something NICE and bring it stateside when you relocate back here. You are allowed to bring in your cars. Good luck. I'd get a nice gt4 or newer markII's or something like that (something that is rare stateside).
Check to see when the JCI is up first, then take it to AAFES and see if it will pass JCI for 15 bucks or so. That will tell you whether or not you want to mess with it at all.
Taking it to do a Pre-Buy JCI inspection tomorrow. Hopefully all is well, I really like it, and it'll be nice while I'm here, plenty of room to drag friends around in, and 4wd is a plus for winter. As for buying something nice and bringing it back... it costs a lot of money to do that. About $10,000 to get everything to U.S. Specs from what I hear. It isn't worth it in my opinion. I plan on saving about $400 a month until I get out in 3 and a half years, which would put me over 24K. Maybe I can buy a nice house or something depending on what kind of job I get. I should have a degree by then, so it is feasable. Then, I should have some extra cash to throw into my Camry, since I'm single and don't have any really expensive habits besides my car... That 5vzf(T!!!)e swap sounds awfully nice... Nah, this Subaru is something to drive while I'm here. My real project is in the States, sleeping.

My mom had a 90 Subaru Legacy for 11 years(more than 100k km). Non turbo, non wagon and built in Japan. No serious problem at all(biggest problem had was water leak from moonroof). It is now belong to my uncle and still in great condition.

Shipping is close to 2500-4500; and i've known retired AF people around houston who drive RHD Toyota Estima's in Houston....they can register those cars as they have documentation of service and record ownership abroad (for 1 year or more) before they import it here.
No modification required? Hmm... If you can get more information about it for me, I'd appreciate it. From what I've heard, everyone is saying 10 grand to get it converted.

^^ to get it converted..yes...but i'm not saying your a plain jane vanilla dude..if your in the AF, there are ways to bring vehicles here legally and use it here. If i see that dude again i will ask, but i've not seen him like a year. He drives a estima with all that lasey curtains and has that lace thing on the top part of seats (like JDM rice)...
