3rd Generation Third Gear Grind. . . Anyone?

Whats up guys, I have a 96 coupe that grinds third gear when I downshift from fourth, but doesnt grind from second to third.? Anyone got a clue?

dead synchro most likely, bearing gone not so likeley.

maybe less of that machine gun hammer shifting =)

125 front wheel horsepower with major retard issues between 4500-5200RPM -
OD switched off, even when not in 3rd results in major power loss/rpm drop.

Yeah, synchros about the only cause of this. Unless youre planning a trans rebuild soon, id just take it easy downshifting. Maybe drive so as to match the revs useing the old double clutching technique to take it easy on this transmission.
Also maybe try changing your gear oil and dump in a can of STP oil treatment too. And also, maybe your clutch is wearing low, this could affect it too.

First, learn how to double clutch and rev-match on your downshifts....

Also, replace your tranny fluid. Add a quart of GM Syncromesh fluid to the mix and most of the grinding should go away.
