camry acceleration problem

Whenever starting from a cold start, my gas pedal would get stuck after a stop. It'd stuck for a few second, and if i continue pressing, it would eventually work. After the engine warmed up, the problem goes away. Any ideas?

Did you try having someone press on the gas while you take a look at the throttle cable and all that?

Try cleaning the throttle body. The butterfly valve might be stuck from being crudded up. Its easy to do, remove the air cleaner tubing. Work the accelerator linkage to see the butterfly open and close. It will be dirty and also the contact area it touches inside the throttle body wall will be dirty too. Clean these deposits off with carb cleaner and a rag and old toothbrush. Maybethis will fix the problem.

That sounds fairly complicated, as i have no clue what the butterfly valve or throttle cable look like. I guess off the the shop it goes, it's due for the 90k services anyway, any clue on how much that will cost at the dealer?

thanks for replying, it's a 99 camry, 4 cyl.

However much they charge for this is too much if it is more than $3.99. Because thats all you need for a can of carb cleaner.

Its not hard, you undo the big hose clamps on each end of the air filter tube (big ol plastic tube between housing and throttle body). Then wiggle and pull it out. The butterfly you see inside the TBI is the thing you need to clean. Soak the area with carb cleaner and wipe with rag.
Gently push the butterfly partway open with a screwdriver or even a pencil, and clean the area the butteryfly touches inside the TBI. Wipe itc lean with rag, make sure you left no tools in TBI lol. Reassemble the aircleaner hose. Thats it.

It would run rought for a minute while the engine burns the carb cleaner, this is normal. And then it will run more smoothly after that.

yeah its really as simple, but if you are really unfamiliar and dont have some manual or a friend to ask and if you're very uncomfortable, then just wait for the service and see what they say. If they plan on charging you more than 15 bucks for fixing the problem...try doing it yourself first.

It really is an easy DIY task. Do a search on this forum for "throttle body cleaning". There should be some good posts on it, including some with step by step instructions and some with pictures.
