Foul odor coming from ac

Lately, I've been noticing a rather foul odor coming emitting from my ac vents. I changed my cabin filter a while ago so its not that.

My car has the same problem too, my guess would be moisture in there. Did you use the recirrulation button? Anyone has more knowledge on this?

I've had this on my other car, Passat. Seems like moiture has gotten in the system and mold or mildew set in. Is that the type of smell you are getting, a moldy mildew smell?

haha, interesting. I had a Passat b4 the Camry and I had the same problem too. I dunno how should a moldy smell be like, but I thought there's some kind of dead animals (of coz that' s not the case). Anyway, the odour only only comes during summer time espcially after AC is used and when I switch to "fan". I guess is the warm-cold factor that cause all the moisture. I actually talked to the dealer about it, they said is a normal problem. I can buy some spray at CanadianTire for such kinda problem, but they said after a while, the odour will come back.

one way to get rid of it is using lysol mildew spray. turn on the car open all doors/windows. Fan on max, heater on max. you will rotate throug each of the vents. You will then spray a ton of that lysol into the fresh air intake vents. Run until the smell of lysol dies down. This can be a while but it is effective most of the time.

For future reference, make sure you leave your car in Fresh air mode before you turn it off. it is best to turn off the ac for about 1 minute before you park the car, and just have the fan on with the fresh vents open. This minimizes moisture gathering in the vents.

^yeah that smell is a common nuisance in our cars. a cheaper alternative to the sprays at auto parts store is to buy an aerosol can of original Lysol spray.

turn on your car, open all the windows and doors. turn your temp. selector to far left cold, fan on highest speed and set it to draw in fresh air. spray some Lysol into the exterior vents that draw in the outside air. (the vents are under the wiper blades, at the bottom of the windshield.) after a few bursts, turn on your a/c for a couple minutes. then turn off the a/c and repeat with the Lysol. it freshens the evaporator in the a/c system.

but its not a permanant solution so you may need to repeat the process depending on how much you use your a/c and when the smell returns. oh and you will want to cover your front seats and console with a sheet or cloth (especially if you have leather) because the Lysol will mist into the cars interior.

damn beaten ha

Thank you. Nodrogkam, for fresh air intake vent, do you mean those under the wiper blades, at the buttom of the windshield like AutoBox suggested? Don't even need to open the hood right? Is the Lysol mildew spray the same as those at the air fresher aisle of WalMart, or it's at the automotive aisle?

yeah the Lysol isn't that expensive, make sure you pick a scent that is pleasing to you because the Lysol smell will linger for a while unless you use another air freshner afterwards. i like the clean linen one myself it has more of an air freshner smell than a disinfectant smell.

of coarse don't breathe it in when your spraying and do not get in the car immediatly after spraying it into the vents. give it a minute to go through the vents...the fumes/spray can be harmful to your lungs and throat if inhaled.

ok..

use that spray/cleaner thing.

I had this problem last year, I didnt use any spray cleaner though. All i did was let fresh air in after each time i turn on the A/C

(A/C off, Fresh air in, FAN SPEED HIGH for 20sec, then u should be fine )

LOL i wish i was smart enough to get a fresh scent...i didnt use an arisol spray can i used a spray bottle style. I think it was like a bathroom mildew cleaner from lysol i used. Huge ass bottle i didnt need but i still used half in my minivan.

Just make sure the fans are on max and the air is on fresh and commence spraying! I'd let the stuff run for AT LEAST 5 minutes before you even attempt to get near the insideof your car.
