I remember my driver's ed teacher telling me of some "air breather" or somthing you put on the oil cap (I believe) that helped increase gas milage, at a little cost of power (fine by me, since gas is so damn much). Any idea?

Guess that is the reason he was a drivers ed teacher and not an engineer?

For better gas mileage:
complete tune-up
drive slower
proper tire pressure
drive slower
alignment
drive slower
make sure brakes are not dragging
drive slower

Don't worry about what other people think....as most of them don't!
To get better mileage you have to do one thing: learn how to drive. People think automatics are just floor n go and save gas.. WRONG. Learn how to accelerate your car within 3000 rpm, know what range to let off gas to let it shift up / down, and know when you can let it coast and for how long. You will be amazed how much gas you can save.
Also, the ECT button is a no no.
Tune up, good oil, and tire psi is important as well =)
drive like a senior citizen and see the gas mileage go up (without the perpetual left turn signal on).
i compromise; i accelerate slowly but do speed = pretty good gas mileage.
yeah, learn to drive, like my camry, i especially now and i dont need to rush for any reason, wont put the rpm's any higher than 2000rpms, i keep it between 1500-2100 and its all good
Is it true the faster you accelerate, the better the gas milleage? I think I read it somewhere in the forums.
YEAH! i'm kidding on that, i'm being sarcastic... the faster you accelerate, the more rpm's you use, the worse your gas mileage is, thats why when you go onto trips and you use cruise control and the rpms hang around 2500rpms, you get your cars best gas mileage, so if you drive 2500rpms or under all the time, not saying you'll pull off 35mpg on the highway, but you'll get closer to 30 and thats city driving.
Ie you accel to 2500 then let up off the gas for a sec and then gas again.
From tests ive done personally (not in a lab...) its just good to keep your accelerations smooth and constant. Even if you hit 3000 rpms in 1st gear its not so bad, but for all the other gears keep it lower than 3000. You will notice an increase in 1 MPG vs if you go up to 4000 rpm's in 1st gear everytime.
grate tips...i have a very heavy foot so i only get 25 mpg on my I4 2005 LE. I Flore it every change i get sometimes letting the rev limiter kick in . SO i guess i will try these tips to improve my mpg.

The oil breather , and later PCV valve set up was a development that reduced pumping losses for the engine where the piston had to push down against the crank case pressure for the exhaust and intake stroke, mostly due to blow by and the air inside the crank case heating up.... remember this is for engines from a long time ago. like turn of the century.
The pcv system, and in high perf engines that use dry sump, actually create a negative pressure in the crank case, but that is usually for collapsing the bubbles in the oil to reduce foaming.

Cruise control is a great gas saver. Obviously a constant speed over a changing speed will save you more gas, since your rpms won't constnatly go up and down. But yeah, main thing is driving slow or at speed limit.
Other things include:
-Lighten the car, less mass=less work needed, do spring cleaning in trunk and under seats.
-Use a fuel injector cleaner at least twice a year, Chevron ones are recommended.
-All the above mentioned tire stuff: rotate, balance, inflate.
-Carpool, hunt for cheapest price along your regular travel routes.

cruise control is the number 1 factor in bad milage as rpm goes up and down constantly as the crappy controller tries to keep you at the speed you want (going up and down hills etc)
i car pool whenever possible =)
also dont go on car cruises every 2nd week, LOL =)
