2nd Generation EGR & Crank vent to throttle body.

G'Day Fellas,

Just asking for some feedback from other 3sfe owners if anyone has removed the EGR valve and noticed a difference in performance?

I removed the valve a couple of years ago and blanked it off where it comes out the back off the head and also blanked it off at the connection to the plenum. At the same time I had a spare plenum pickled clean, put it on and even a few years after doing this the plenum and throttle body are still extremely clean.

The car has been inspected by both NSW and ACT rego inspectors and NONE off them have ever noticed the EGR missing !!!

I also put an oil catch can in-line with the crank vent to throttle body connection.

Any positive OR negative feedback on this subject is most welcomed.

Have a good day folks......

In the US removal of the emission control componets is illegal. Removal of EGR increases combustion temperature, causes ping and either calls for higher octane gas or timing retard .The fuel economy improves by about 12 percent.

The EGR system won't yield a performance increase by removing it. It simply recirculates gases. Yes you do get emmisions dropped, because your "reburning" old gases again. I dunno about mileage though, why would you gain 12% mileage? O2 sensor reading lower concentration?
This all being said, you will "keep" the performance over a long/longer time period, because as you stated, your intake isn't getting as dirty and carboned up. This ultimiatly will allow the motor to run smoother.

12% gain by removing the EGR? If that was true the manufacters would have figured out a way to get by with out it! An EGR valve is not mandated by any law, it is just part of an emmissions control system that is illegal to remove in the US and probably in AUS also!

Volvo B230 engines do not have EGR; 12 percent increase was obtained on 90 camry 2.5 V-6 under highway use/89 midgrade octane. The EGR passage was plugged by me to prevent rough idle due to leaking stuck open EGR valve for 1 week, until I located a good used valve for $8 on the local junkyard, so the customer had not to pay arm and leg to the smog shop.
