4th Generation How would you unset a car choke?

I've googled information on a car choke, and I'm not too sure what exactly it is. In my Gen4 1997 Camry, when the car is off, you pump the brake and turn the steering wheel until the brake locks and the steering wheel can't turn anymore. Is that considered as setting the cars choke? The key would not turn in the ignition slot, so it was "locked". To unset it, I had to set it into neutral and push the car for about 3-4 feet and the car was able to be turned on.

Any ideas on a different way to unset it? Would disconnecting the battery work?

Ummm....Im not really sure what your asking. I havent seen a choke on a car in a long time, and unless for some strange reason you 97 camry has a carburator on it you dont have a choke. Or maybe your refering to some other function as the "choke". Sounds more like your having trouble turning the key in the ignition. Maybe a shift lock problem?

This has got nothing to do with a choke. What you experienced is part of the anti-theft system. Even if your steering wheel is "locked" it will still move a little bit - then start the car as normal. BTW - you have no choke as commonly known in a carburated engine, the car is fuel-injected. Why did you pump the brake and turn the wheels in the first place?

That's called locking your wheel, not car choke. Choke has to do with cars that use carburetors, which yours doesn't, so don't worry about it. To unlock your wheel, simply press on the brakes, turn the ignition, and jiggle the wheel until it becomes unlocked.

Ohhh, whoops, I guess I called it wrong.

My friend was pressing the brake and turning the steering wheel at the same time and it locked up, so for some reason we assumed this was called a car's choke.

Thanks for the advice.
