Interesting Problem...

Alrighty... I search and maybe my seach skill suck, but here is my prob...

I have a 3s-fe with an auto tranny. When I fist start up the car, the cars shift fine but after the tranny warms up... it refuse to sownshift back into the lower gear when I come to a stop. Meaning that I would have to "manually" shift it back into first gear on the gear selector to get it moving again.

Any suggestions on the cheapest way to fix this prob?

Thanks guys.

Oh and this was the camery that I was swapping the engine out of the 91LE was helping me with,

Question

You don't say anything abot error codes - maybe 91 doesn't have any? What year did you swap 2, from?

Key info; Does the ECU know the cars speed?

1: Does the speedo work?
2: Did you check the TPS?
3: Did you properly adjust the linkage on the trans gear selector?
4: Did you properly adust the throttle pressure to the trans?

Note: it will only take a couple starts in 2 or 3rd gear and you will fry the forward clutches and/or high clutches in the trans. Go smell it. If it smells burned, maybe it's too late allready. What color is the fluid now?

I would be flushing the cooler, trans, draining the pan, replace teh filter. If you find particals of anything, they can stick a valve in the trany and cause 2nd - 3rd take-off's which will fry the trans quickly.

Best of luck on that one...

It was a 91 3sfe swap into a 87 camry. Keept the tranny. Have no idea how to adjust number 1-4. Details...?

The tranny and fluid smells okay.. have not been driven much because of this prob. As I said, it only happen after being driven for a bit after you first start it up. When it start acting up, if you pull the gear slelctor back into first, it will shift normally again.

Oh and one other thing... Cruise control works.. sort of. If you just turn it on and let go of the gas it wont stay in o/d. It will downshift then refuse to shift back up until you turn off cruise or accellerate to the desire speed.

-thanks again

Time to take it to a GOOD tranny shop that knows Toyotas! Not neccesarily the cheapest.
Anybody can quess over the internet but that isn't going to fix it!
