if u can give me more info on the car i can look it up on mitchell. al i need is year model make and whether it's a SE, etc. if the code is for the O2 sensor and u had them replaced the the shop reset ur computer.
Bad catalytic converter is the most likely cause. I got the same code on my 2003 Camry LE a couple weeks ago. Luckily for me, it's still under the federal emissions warrany (8 years, 80k miles).
Oddly enough, the day before I took it in, the light went out on it's own. I don't know if that means the problem resolved itself or what, but I took it in anyway.
Question
I have a 2001 Toyota Camry (4 cylinder). My "check engine" light came on and I was told by two different dealers this my catalytic converter was bad. I had the converter replaced. The code cleared for one month. Now the code and the light are back. My normal dealer claims it's the catalytic converter again. They also claim that the oxygen sensors "seem to be working ok." What can be causing this problem. I'm tired of buying parts and I'm tired of seeing this light on my dashboard. Help!
Answer
Toyota has issued a service bulletin regarding the P0420 trouble code that could apply to your vehicle, to be sure if this bulletin applies to your car I will need the VIN#, you will find it on the sticker on the door, once I have this information I can tell you what steps to take with the dealer, if this is the case it is covered under the factory warranty.
Yes, they were correct, there is a problem with the catalytic converter performance but the problem is with the onboard computer which may have to be recalibrated, don't let them touch your car until I get back to you.

Answer
The PO 420 code is not an O2 sensor failure code, there is a problem with the catalytic converter, if you reside in the US the warranty for the converter is covered under the federal emission control warranty for 8yrs/80,000 miles, also you didn't say whether it is a 4 cylinder or V-6 engine but if it is a four cylinder it has no timing belt, if it's a V-6 it does and it needs to be replaced at 90,000 miles.
