tranny/engine swap question

I have a 92 camry and put a 97 engine and tranny in it. I changed all the wirng over to the 92 configuration. There is a problem however. There is a hockey puck size sensor in the back of the old 92 tranny that can not go into the new 97 tranny because in the new tranny that sensor hole is part of the casting. What is this sensor and do i need it?

I believe its a speed sensor. Although I'm not 100% sure.

This is an E153 trans, but its similar...

1 is the reverse lights switch/connector
2 is the VSS, Vehicle Speed Sensor.

Without (1), your reverse lights won't work.
Without (2), your speedo and possibly some other speed related stuff (shifting??) will not work.
