Gen5 Anyone know how to remove leather trim off shift knob?

How can you remove the leather trim from the shift knob on the Gen 5? I plan on installing a new trim. Can someone help me out? Thanks.

Is it not just a matter of finding a starting point on the stitching, triming the tied-off end, then stripping the thread out of the seam(s)? Worst case (assuming you have an automatic) is that they might've used some glue to make the leather follow the contours of the handle. I actually just removed the leather from my steering wheel (recovering it myself) and that was my approach... same with the shift knob on the 5-speed... trim the thread carefully, peel the leather away. When you're done you can use the leather as a template for your new piece(s).

Isn't there a simpler way? I bought a replacement part that has leather with wood trim on it from ebay. I just want to take off the old trim and install the other trim.

Here are pics of the item that I'm trying to install.

if you're looking to just replace the leather part, look at your first picture. There's two holes for screws... you should see the corresponding holes on your original part. That should help with getting the knob off at least. Unfortunatley I have no idea how to get the lock release or the overdrive button out or the chrome trim off, so you're on your own there.
