How long did you run the engine before you noticed the oil was leaking right out and shut it off? Did you rev the engine or was it just sitting at idle? During this time there was no oil pressure to the engine. That means there was no oil reaching the critical engine parts. It doesn't take long to ruin an engine this way.

Theres another alternative, its a used Japanese engine. They are fairly cheap esp if you do it yourself. But caveat emptor if you opt to go with one of these. Do not buy a used Japanese engine sight unseen! Examine it carefully first, make sure all your old parts will fit, that the intake and exhaust ports match and that this engine is an exact match for yours.
Many japanese engines are just a little different than the ones made for US bound cars. And replacing the stuff that doesnt interchange (like your manifolds and oil pan, etc.) can make the cost prohibitive i.e. not worth doing.
