3rd Generation Transaxle leak...any help?

Recently acquired a 1996 Camry automatic with 194,000 miles. The engine runs perfectly, but I have a slight leak coming from the transaxle. Just prior to purchase, the CV joints were replaced (with drive shafts). Since this procedure, the previous owner mentioned there was a trans leak on the drivers side. He brought the vehicle to a shop and the mechanic said he needed a major transmission overhaul (this is why he sold me the car for only $1000).

It is likely that a seal has been damaged while replacing the drivers side drive shaft (leaks from the transaxle side of the drive shaft)? If so, what measures must be taken to replace?

By the way, with the leak is slight, and the trans shift perfectly through all the gears.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks to all who could share any such problems and or solutions.

Theres a seal on each side of the tranny (actually the differential), where the axles go in.

Its possible that one or both of these seals are damaged and/or leaking. You'll have to look at it and find out.

The seals are a few bucks a piece from Toyota. But replacing them is a pain in the ass, as the axle(s) have to be removed. After that, you remove the seal and replace with new one.

^ No.

Just normal hand tools will do. Although a impact wrench will help removing the nut on the axle, which takes a 30mm socket.

You need a prybar, to pry the axle out of the tranny.

The passenger side can be a pain in the ass, if you need to remove it. Passenger side axle goes through a mount (bolted to the back of the block). Theres a bolt and snapring that needs to be removed.

Sometimes the bearing on the axle will seize to the mount. If this is the case, remove the mount from the back of the block, then try to seperate the axle from the mount.
