4th Generation I just came back from tranny service

Car is 266 000 kms now, I thought the shifting was clunky and annoying and it worried me cause I didn't know when was the last time it had been changed.

But then I was scared crapless to have them flush it because of all the horror stories I've read all over the net. Didn't feel good changing it myself, unlike many other things I don't mind doing as a weekend mechanic.

The improvements are immediate. Smoother shifts, less shudder when shifting, and less vibration on idle when in drive. Jerking is also less pronounced when letting off the gas a bit to engage O/D. The car still clunks when shifting from Park to Reverse, but I guess I can't do much about it. I don't shift it from Drive to Reverse either cause then the clunk is over the top, I just stop by Park to go back to reverse.

I will bump this thread if anything, so all the scared dudes out there will know if my tranny melts next week, but honeslty I doubt it. And for people searching for answers on Internet messageboards, if this thread has not been bumped for a year and your tranny fluid doesn't look like Soy Sauce, go ahead and do it.

mayby that clunking is dues to bad motor mount or tranny mounts. Yor tranny should last for a longer time now that you changed the fluid.

Or maybe the clunking is from worn CV axles, do you hear clicking on turns -

clunking is probably caused by broken mounts, or if you installed your own strut bar into your car, the throttle body maybe hitting it.

or it could be the cv axels/joints like marc suggested.

and transmission flushes are great. i will definately agree that the improvements are immediate.

Ummm when you are going from park to reverse are you on a slope of any kind? If you are and if you didnt pull your handbrake up all the way the car will be using the gearbox to lock the wheels. To stop it rolling all the way down. When you then shift out of park, it makes a clunk sound due to you trying to move the gears when there is pressure on the cogs holding the car in place.
