4th Generation This is what I've leared about the Auto Transmission.

[ L ] ===== The car only uses the 1st gear.
O/D off === No effect.

[ 2 ] ===== The car starts from 1st gear, then 2nd gear. Only 1st and 2nd gears are used.
O/D off === No effect.

[ D ] ===== The car starts from 1st gear, then computer determins which gear to use.
O/D off === Same as [ D ], except, the 4th gear won't be used.

Questions:

1) Are the above assumtions correct?

2) The car always starts from 1st gear, whether overdrive is on or off, correct?

3) When downshifting from [ D ] to [ 2 ], do I have to ease the throttle? Can I do the downshift while I'm still flooring the acceleration pedal?

P.S. This is the 2000 Camry V6 I'm talking about.

Thanks.

1. yes

2. yes

3. no cuz te tranny won't let you downshift from [D] to [2] you have to step on the brake and push the shifter button to shift to any gear.

The only one you can shift is 4th and 3th gear that it. You can shift to [2] if you froce it really hard it would in but you'll be braking something along the way. Don't know what but it will

Okay, thanks. I have one more question:

4.) In a manual, when you are to pass the car in front of you, you always downshift from 5th to 4th. In this auto tranny, when I'm to pass, am I supposed to turn the o/d off before passing? Hence, achive the same effect in a manual.

Correct?

yes you can but you'll wear down 3th gear faster then the other gears which mean that when ever the car up shift or down shift to 3th gear it might slip

since its an automatic, let it shift itself. if you want to shift gears yourself, you should have gotten a manual trans.

with an auto you can floor and change gears all you want...no need to step on the brake to change from N to 1 and back.

Since it is an AUTOMATIC you can be going 60 mph or faster and slam it into 1 from D and the transmission will decide which gear it is safe to shift into, it will NOT shift into 2nd or 1st if you are currently doing 60+ mph. well...it might actually redline at 2nd...i forgot what my car did.

actually... i dont really agree to your answer to number 3. you dont have to step on the brake to downshift from [d] to [2]. and if your going from [L] to [2] you dont need to step on the brake. good job.

I completely agree, if your camry is well maintained and in decent shape engine wise, it should give you more than enough power to surpass a regular car....didnt help when i wanted to cut off a porsche carrera4 however, lol

lol ive got what u call a quick shifter, im sure its dangerous but cbf fixin it. all i need to do is just push it up or down without pressin the button in to change gears. good when u want to change the gears urself but the auto changes at about 6500 anyway normally when u slam it so no point. like said by ghettosled above if u wanna change gears get a manual.
