Morning everyone;
I need some assistance on whether the 3.5 will use the additional octane in premium fuel. With a compression ratio of 10:8 to 1, I can only assume that the ECU would be adaptive enough to use the additional octane.
My G35 definetly pushes out a few more horsepower with premium.
Help!
In the United States it is recommended to use 87 octane, as stated in the owner's manual. Since I live at such a high altitude (I live in Colorado, my altitude here is 5,500 ft.) we have the option to use 85 or 87, I still use 87 though.

thats cause the g35 NEEDS premium
i feel sorry for your g35 if youve been running anything lower than 91.. poor car.
Most cars that need premium fuel, have knock sensors. If you put regular fuel, in knock is detected and the timing is retarted, thus saving you engine from damage but reducing power output. Regular gas in a G35 will retard the timing, that car was designed to use premium fuel. With the price of gas these days...
But the Question is If premium gas is used in the 07 V6 will it adapt and put out more horsepower without the need to reprogram the ECU?
I read on a board somewhere and I may be speading BS but... I heard that in the past some manufactors (honda?) were claiming horse power ratings using premium fuel even though the model only required regular and therfore had lower HP ratings.
To Trickyazn;
I have always used premium fuel in my G35 BUT the owners manual says that a minimum octane rating of 87 is required which my manual for the Se V6 says.
I just picked up the car and the dealership were a bunch of clowns, so I have a tank of regular to burn off. This buying experience with this car has been less than satisfactory. Picked it up yesterday and it had NOT been cleaned in the interior, ONLY washed on the outside and a full tank of regular gas.
I will most likely run premium in it after this tank runs down. It would be useless to try and get Toyota to give any kind of intelligent opinion on this topic.
Anyway, have a great day
My wife's purchase experience was pretty bad too, the salesperson had no clue about the car and gave my wife inacurate information, Yes the back seats in the SE fold down, yes the SE comes in light grey interior, etc.
That said I love the car.
I would miss the RWD of the G35 though. Personally I like a RWD car for any spirited driving.
The 1MZFE in the Gen 3.5 RECOMMENDS 91 for optimal performance, BUT says 87 is ok. I usually use 87, but sometimes treat it to 91 when I feel like a lil extra power, lol. Yes, 91 gives a lil extra, but if your not gonna be racing it, or constantly doing hard acceleration, just stick with the 87.
