Okay, so if you haven't accessed the shifter through the console, here's the deal. Find yourself a 1" metal putty knife... thin blade is better. Use the putty knife to
carefully press between the shifter trim plate and the center console and pry upward GENTLY to pop the clips upward. There are two clips, one on either side of the shifter. The putty knife in the picture below is shown right around where the left clip is. The right one is directly opposite this one. Let me know if that isn't clear... don't do anything unless you feel comfortable with it.
Once that's open you can check on the shift assembly. Looseness in the left-right motion relates to the shifter left, crank arm assembly, and one of the two shifter cables. See the picture below.
Okay, so the picture shows the trim plate off. The
SHIFT ARM goes to a center
SHIFT PIVOT-- a big ball that rests in a cradle. When you move the shifter side-to-side about the shift pivot, the
SIDE STEM rotates up and down. To make use of that up-and-down motion, a spring-loaded
CRANK ARM is used (shown higlighted in yellow, above). Note at the bottom of the crank arm (kind of out-of-focus in this picture) the crank arm attaches to the SHIFT CABLE, which will be pushed fore-and-aft by the crank arm. The shift cable is captured by a RETAINING CLIP, to ensure the cable doesn't disconnect.
If you are able to freely move the shifter side-to-side, there may be a problem here. Check to make sure all the items here are connected as shown. Maybe the retaining clip fell off. Maybe the spring came loose which would simply allow too much feel of free-play in the shifter.
Remember, though, that at the other end of that cable is the connection to the tranny itself. That might be your next step if everything here looks fine.
Hope this helps a bit... let me know if you have questions.

I think I half fixed it but the spring is hella bent
thanks in advance!
