No offense, but you must be really be driving your car hard, very hard or abusing your car. It's not bad luck. Going thru 2 engines and 4 tranny in a 97 Camry is NOT bad luck. I had a 95 Passat Auto and these were known to be terrible tranny, even that car I didn't go thru 4 tranny's. Another possible reason, the mechanic you take it to doesn't know what he's doing. Again, I'm not trying to offend you in anyway, but I think anyone here will agree, chances of 2 engines and 4 tranny is NOT bad luck it must be some other factor.
Maybe my posts was a little miss leading I should have said I ended up paying for 2 but went thru 4 from the first which came with the car when I bought it to the fourth which I have a feeling is about to say farewell also. And no I dont ricer shift i have an auto so Im confuised if you mean from L-2-D than no but I do admit I have one bad habit of sliding the shift knob from D - N w/o pressing the button.

Only if the torque convertor is bad! It is a flexplate not a flywheel which is for a manual tranny.
Ever think about changing fluids?

if you only shift from drive to neutral without pressing the button thta doesnt really do damage...not the sort that requires a tranny to be replaced so many times. yes the fluid, very important to keep clean.
somehow on my v6, if you let it get dirty once, it'll never be clean until you flush it.
was all the work performed by a dealership and were those new transmissions?

I read your post again and noticed you had this car only since October 02 and you've changed the engine twice and 4 tranny. So you are averaging a tranny a year. I thought you had it since 1997 when it was new. Now this is more the reason it is NOT bad luck, there is no way a car can go thru so many engines and tranny in such a short period of time. The only thing that would make sense is your mechanic is scamming you, putting in damaged tranny in your car. Even if you drive your car hard, it's not possible to go thru that many tranny's and 2 engines in such a short time. I would not take it back to that same mechanic.
By the way, wouldn't the cost of replacing all those tranny's and engine cost more than your car by now. Didn't you suspect something after the second tranny change/repair????
No trannys were used yea I know that was dumb but its all I can afford with the ever increassing tution rates (up to 8Gs a sem) and gas. and Not a dealer but trans shop. Also I change the oil dont flush big diff or big problem ?
in that case you're better off selling this car for whatever it's worth and grabing a corolla or civic. It'll save you gas, cheaper to maintain, and you'll just not have to deal with the troubles of this car and hopefully never deal with that shop.
If that shop is any good at all, they should repair it under some sort of workmanship warranty.
ToyotaToday, yea but again I could only afford used trannys and like electrionics which go bad after the warrinity exp, so did the trannys and I was only given 3 months in which something had to go worng for them to give me another tranny free.
nodrogkam, I bought the trannys from diff places and installed by different people after themm going bad and the shop not taking any resposblity. I was very close to introducing those guys with my uncles 10 lb sledge hammer I call Big Bertha.

Oh I see, so they did a tranny swap instead of a tranny rebuild. Even with tranny swaps, there's no way chances of getting 4 bad ones is very very unlikely. Sounds like he would replace someone's bad tranny and then recycle it to his next customer.
If you can afford it, get the tranny REBUILT (at a good tranny shop, and should offer 1 year warranty at the least) oppose to replaced. When i had my tranny rebuilt for my Passat they offered a one year warranty, as it should be. But for a tranny swap, 3 months warranty is normal too, but very abnormal if all 4 tranny's are bad.
Anyway good luck with it.
I agree with a previous post, get a civic or corolla with a stick shift.
Thanks for the help maybe I just love how my car looks and drives (normal day) and there are very few camrys done up in Houston that Ive seen. I dont know maybe or I might just get another camry but newer and a standard. will see what happens thanks for all help guys I keep you informed.
Patching engine or trans is not a good solution. I wouldn't do it. Choose a reliable rebuilder for the trans next time, (or at least a different one)! Also a transmission oil cooler may help. And synthetic tranny fluid. If you're not beating on the car then you have been going to the wrong trans suppliers. That obviously don't know how or care to rebuild a tranny right.
