Recovering my steering wheel...

My 92 SE steering wheel was really starting to look like crap, and I had been looking or a nice black leather-wrapped steering wheel on eBay, TAP Recycling or anyplace else. As a few SE owners have found, the black leather is a hard find.

After a few failed attempts to buy a new one, I decided on a new alternative. I have seen a few people use Wheelskins, but I wanted a more OEM look to the wheel.

I found some black upholstery leather on eBay, tore the old cover off, layed out the old leather on new, cut out pieces and sewed and stitched together. Wah lah!

Okay, so it was more than just "wah lah", as it took a few hours stitching it together. It's definitely not OEM quality, but it's FAR better than the wheel used to be. I dare say it's a bit more luxurious feeling than stock. A couple close-ups...

I haven't cinched off the ends of the waxed thread yet, but that's the final step.

You get a sense for the fun I had stitching this! At first I was getting a sore back, hunched over working at the table. I finally made a 2x4 jig to place the wheel at eye level and able to spin as I moved along. Still some tedious work... But I'm happy with the results.
