2nd Generation JDM auto transmission

Would this thing swap into my 88 4cyl auto? Its very cheap, I was thinking for a spare, I doubt I would bother going with a 3SGE, although it would be cool to have it as a option for later on.

Here's the ad :

Toyota automatic transmission - I got it with a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) motor I bought. I need the motor, and not the transmission, so here's the transmission for sale (or trade, or ???)

Motor was a 3S-GE, I think this unit came out of a SW20 SW21 MK2 ( MKII ) MR2

I know the motor/trans came from Japan. The motor is in really nice shape, so I assume the transmission is fine too.

Other North American cars that used the same S-series motor are the Celica (86 onward until about 93) with the 3S-GE, 3S-FE and 5S-FE. Also, the Camry used the 3S-FE and 5S-FE motors as well. Maybe the Avalon too (I don't know)

Ahh, so that's what JDM stands for. Dumb as it may make me sound, I've never known what it meant.

That tranny should bolt right up to a 3S-FE.

3S-FE and 3S-GE share the same block.

Do you know the code on that tranny? The one in your Camry is a A140E (electronic) or A140L (mechanical).

Ya, I figured that it would bolt to the engine, just not sure if it will bolt to the car and if the wiring would hook right up or with slight modification even. I just sent an email to see if he has the tranny code, so I'll post it as soon as I find out. Would it say on the tranny itself?

Also, he has the 8 bolt 3SGE flexplate, would that work on the 3SFE? I read some of your posts (88LE) about the 6 and 8 bolt flexplates, but could not figure out which is which through the part numbers. Any idea how to figue out what flexplate i got?

The tranny will bolt up as 88 said...but would there be differences in the shifting mechanisms? Being from a RWD MR2? I know the E153 has this problem....

You would probably need the Transmission Control Module for that tranny also.

Hmm...I wonder if I should even bother picking this up then. It is for free though.
