Fan Constant Run connection

While hunting around at the back of the engine with the wiring loom, i found this little plug. It has 2 wires, (Black w/ red stripes) and a cap on it to "connect" the two together. After disconnecting this little cap, i found that when the key is turned to "Ignition/Run", both thermo fans stay constantly on. Replacing the cap returns the fans to normal "thermo" operation.

Heres a pic of the little plug:

So yeah, just a FYI and also a question as to why this would be needed? What purpose would it serve? Really hot weather?

Cheers.

Because you dont always need the fans to run. At highway speed in cool weather, for example, when there is lots of airflow through the radiator and running the fans is sometimes a waste of power etc. and could overcool the engine and lower your mileage. So its connected to a thermoswitch.

also referred to as fan relay! If your theromostat is stuck to close position, uncaping (unhooking) this relay would make the fans stay on constantly! In the middle-east for the first 1000kms the dealerships unhook (uncap as per your teminology) this to prevent heat-soak, to keep the engine temps lower for new cars until they are broken in well.
