Numbers on rod caps?

What exactly do the stamped numbers mean on the rod caps. I know it has to do with the bearing but what exactly

What jet speed said, and thats news to me. But if the numbers are 1, 2, 3, or 4 etc. they tell you what cap goes with what rod. Because they have to go back on the same rod they came off off, because they are machined to match each other.
In other words, mixing them up is a bad bad thing to do and might cause engine problems i.e. your rod cap breaks loose and the cap blows a hole through your oil pan (which i saw happen on a Ford escort - the aftermath rather).

You will get excessive rod knock and wear on the main bearings if they are mixed up.
Always keep them paired up correctly..same goes for cam shims/valves/buckets/girdles.

Thanks I kind of figured! And the numbers on the ROD CAPS only go to 3! ( different bearing sizes. The main caps are the ones that have 1-4. But those numbers are only good If you plan on putting back the oem bearings. IF you have machine work then all that changes.
