Power steering fluid

A friend of mine has a '98 Camry 2.2 with 100k and the PS fluid is black. Car is not here now. What is the original fluid, power steering fluid or ATF? What mileage does it usually get changed at? Looks like its due.

Thanks

Use a turkey baster

from the 99 cent store or wherever, and suck out this fluid. Add some fluid, run the engine a minute, shut off engine. Repeat til clean. Theres not a whole bunch of fluid in there like maybe a quart or two but i would buy 2 or 3 qts of new ATF fluid. I wouldnt use anything to attempt to flush it other than new fluid, this could create problems if you dump chemicals in there and they are not compatible with the seals or bearings etc.

This is bound to get tedious after a few minutes but IMO its the easiest way. If you are disconecting hoses, etc. you risk a leak and getting air in the system plus maybe a big mess, no big deal but its easy to avoid just by using the baster.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I know the turkey baster methood from 99cent. In fact I invented it. There is a good pinned post about using a clear hose and barb to do a flush on it. I think I will do that this time since I just got the stuff for $4 tonight. Also you can use a bolt to block one end of the small hose if you look at this thread. Material was 3/8 ID clear hose, 3/8 barb and a bolt for $.25. Total about $4.
