PO401 is usually caused by the vsv that controls vacumme to the egr valve. It is the switch on the back of the engine under the intake manifold. I would bet the local toyota dealer has a couple in stock because this is a common part failure.

My girlfriends car didn't heal itself, it's been roughly half a year too. now it's time for smog. i'm somewhat mechanically inclined but this is something I haven't done before. Anyone know how easy to fix/clean this?

same thing hppend to me on my 96 5sfe, i replaced the valve and also the lines for it, its just 2 lines its not that hard, any who i replaced the valve and reset the ECU, and it went away for like 3 weeks and now its back again not sure exaactly but it might be the ticket to pass smog and you can fix it at a later time
