K&N Performance Oil Filter vs Toyota OEM oil filter
I went to the dealer and bought an OEM oil filter today, and I kept thinking the lady gave me the wrong one. So, I went to Shuck and bought the filter I've been using just in case, it's the K&N performance filter.
1.) And I immediately notice that the K&N is a lot heavier! The toyota OEM costs about $5, but the K&N cost more than twice, $13. Now I'm thinking, there is no way the OEM is better than the OEM. What do you think?
2.) On the OEM filter, there is a list of engines printed on there, but does not mention 1MZ-FE on it. The part number is 90915-YZZG1, and the engine application:
- 1G series
- M series
- VZ series
- 3S-GTE
- 22R series
- JZ series
- 2TZ-FE
Did the lady give me the wrong one? I told her specifically it's a V6 engine on 2000 Camry. Is the 1MZ-FE engine considered to be M series?
The numbers change with the seasons and manufacturing locations with Toyota. The G1 is a recent change from the D1, although the G1 has been used in other applications. You can also use the D3 (I prefer this slightly larger filter). The D1 is still available.
As for weight, I suspect the metal casing of the K&N is thicker. That's great if your filter is exposed to flying rocks and other road debris. I don't think that's an issue with your engine filter location.

So, do you think she gave me the right filter? My engine is not listed on the filter and I've just done the research, the M series is actually the inline 6 engine family, not the 1MZ-FE V6 engine.
i always used Mobil 1 or K&N oil filters with my Mobil 1 5w-30
it doesnt really matter i can get k&n filtesr for like $8 so it doesnt matter and i always change the filter + oil every 3000-5000 miles anyways
Or is Toyota OEM better or K&N? Some say the K&N is too restrictive, but on its official site, it advertize as "high flow rate": http://knfilters.com/oilfilter.htm
I have both at hands now, and the K&N is a lot heavier than the Toyota OEM.
The K&N is an ok filter, just not worth the money IMO. the puralator PURE ONE is the best bang for the buck
but then again, I have known people to run 150,000 miles on crappy Fram filters, so maybe the filter isn't as important as some may think
I use the regular puralator premium filters, pep boys puts them onsale for 99 cents each and I bought about 20 of them at the last sale. I am set for a while. These have shown to be a very good filter for the money, at least as good as OEM
My question is, I have both $13 K&N filter and $5 OEM filter at hands, which one should I use? If the filter is too restrictive, it could affect the engine performance, no?
Is K&N better than the OEM? Or is the OEM better? In terms of engine performance (acceleration, overtaking, etc), I mean.
