Gen5 tranny q

So I took the car to get its regular 3K oil change and added Auto-rx.com to remove the sluge build up.

Current Milage: 45,081.x

At the shop they told me that I should change my tranny fluid, they proceded to show me 2 liquids on a piece of paper; one pink in color the other amber. Pink was suppose to be new and amber was suppose to be mine, and the would cost $100.00 They stated that it should be changed every 40K.

I don't remember when, but I remember reading that camry doesn't need to have its fluids changed. And i went on the toyota parts & service website and checked all the recomended serices not once did I see change tranny fluid.

So I come here tonight to ask if i must truely change my tranny fluid or not??

Yes. It is recommended to do your tranny fluid I think every 60k or maybe even 40k. I do know for a fact, it should not cost you 100 dollars.

Edit: I just looked online and Synthetic is about 10-15 dollars per quart or half gallon. I saw 32 oz advertised, but that seems big to me.

But that just shows that you are getting ripped off if you pay 100 bucks.

I thought Toyota switched to a lifetime fluid? I know they did away with the dip stick on some for this reason...

there is no such thing as a lifetime fluid

and yes, you should change it- you may not have to flush it, but you should at the very least do a drain and fill

Yes but change it with Toyota TIV

fluid. I have your same car and that's what toyota says to use. And changing the ATF is easier than changing the oil on this car, just get you a 10mm hex wrench and remove the drain plug from the trans and drain it. And refill with TIV fluid and please dont overfill, your trans wont like this a bit. If you can measure how much comes out, this will make refilling a lot easier.
You get TIV fluid from the Toyota dealer, its a little steep at about 3.50 or $4 a qt but that is what is specified. I wouldnt use anything else or Toyota says you will have transmission problems. It only take about 3 qts but i'd buy 4.

I wouldnt have my tranny flushed by a shop. Why, because i doubt that the shop is going to use TIV fluid to flush! They will just flush it with the universal ATF thats already in the machine...and yes that's the same fluid toyota says NOT to use.
