MY '01 I4 auto maxs at approx 96MPH. Read there's a wire on the ECU you can disconnect but I haven't tried it. Other advice has been having the ECU reprogrammed at a speed shop (or other computer cracker experts).

I think it's because most stock tires are marked at a lower speed rating on the sidewalls.

Here is a chart:

M 81 mph 130 km/h
N 87 mph 140km/hTemporary Spare Tires
P 93 mph 150 km/h
Q 99 mph 160 km/hStudless & Studdable Winter Tires
R 106 mph 170 km/hH.D. Light Truck Tires
S 112 mph 180 km/hFamily Sedans & Vans
T 118 mph 190 km/hFamily Sedans & Vans
U 124 mph 200 km/h
H 130 mph 210 km/hSport Sedans & Coupes
V 149 mph 240 km/hSport Sedans, Coupes & Sports Cars
W 168 mph 270 km/hExotic Sports Cars
Y 186 mph 300 km/hExotic Sports Cars
Taken from tirerack.com

Some stock tires at rated at H or lower, since the car wasn't made to go above those speeds, they don't have to give you a V rated tire.

okies thanks... havent seen that in australia though i havent looked that well...

what happens if you take a tyre past its speed rating? is it the side walls that blow or the tred part? always wondered what a flat at high speed would be like...

lower rating tires typically how worse traction and lower temperature tolerance. as the tire goes round faster and faster the air inside heats up and expands. the psi shoots up and if the tire cannot handle the psi increase then it'll blow. A high speed blowout is pretty bad, especially the front. i've seen a front and rear blowout at about 70mph. In the rear, the guy managed to stop after swerving into two lanes, nearly hitting other people. The front blowout wasnt so great... this person went sideways into a wall. I would have stopped and helped if i wasnt driving so close and passed him by, so others helped.
