Replacing rear struts

Hello, I'm x-posting this from the Solara forum since I haven't gotten a response over there and I'm told that supposedly the rear suspension on the Solara is identical to the Camry. . .

Anyone out there have a good write-up on replacing the rear struts on an '02 Solara V6 SE? I have one going bad and would like to research the procedure before getting into it. Thanks in advance.

Also, since I'm on the subject, does anyone know how to access the upper strut attachment point? From the trunk, it's behind an immovable piece of sheet metal. Do I have to remove the seats and/or rear deck or what?

On a mid 90's Camry it looks like you need to take out the rear package trim tray (rear deck). First remove the rear cushion and seat back. Then take out this tray. The shock tower should be visible. The location is a little deceiving at first.

Thanks - I'll give that a whirl. Can't imagine the design changed all THAT much and there really aren't too many places it could be.

I simply can't understand why do you need to replace the strut in a 2002 car, specialy if it is identical to Camry.. The only reason might be because you might have hit is with something.

3rd Generation

You could have bought the car yesturday brand new and be forced to replace the struts tomorrow depending on your driving habbits. He either has horrible roads where he lives, or he just exceeds the limits of the stock suspension with whatever he does. I rented a 2005 corolla, on a Friday morning, got insurance, and proceeded to drive around all day. That night my friend and I went up to tantlus( I think that's how it's spelled) and proceeded to put the car through hell. When I returned it the next day, I had to wait for an hour and a half waiting for them to compile a damage report. All 4 struts were blown. The control arms, knuckles, and driveshafts were completely screwed. All four tires were bald with the thread showing. To top it all off the engine needed a complete overhaul, and the automatic transmission was about to go. Never think that a new car is invincible to having the same problems that a 12 year old car has.
