4th Generation Datal Link Connector problem

I have a '98 Camry V6 XLE. My engine light went on so I took it in. It turned out to be the gas cap. So after I got a bill for having the OBD code read, I decided to get a scanner. Since my car is a 98, I checked my Haynes manual which indicated it is OBD II compliant. Well I bought an Actron CP9175 (OBD II). As it turns out my data link connector is not a 16 pin type, it's sort of round. Now I assuming that all OBD IIs are 16 pin. Can anyone enlighten me on this matter. Is there an adaptor available. I have a suspision that I have a tween car... "tween" a model with parts a previous model year. Or maybe a '98 is an OBD I. Help!

thanks, Rafael

Just want to be sure but are you using the correct DLC connector (which is located underneath the steering column above the foot pedal area). I have a 97' camry LE and that's where mine is located. It is a "trapezoid" type of plug. My 97' is OBD II.

Toyota has both the OBD II connector and a round Toyota one on my '99.
And yes, the OBD II is right near the steering column with the round one up under the dash right near it.

OBD2 started with the 96 model year, so your car is certainly OBD2. I have a 98 XLE in line 4 and it has the 16 pin connector. Look for the 16 pin connector under the dash where others have suggested. I have had emissions tests here in Illinois every 2 years. They just plug in to that connector. Ifg the car didn't have one I couldn't pass the emission test. Just take another look for it.
