What are the factory mufflers made of?

I have a 2005 XLE V6 which I am selling on Thursday so I can pick up my '07 XLE V6. I noticed on my '05 and even on some demo '07's that the paint on the mufflers flakes off with very few miles no doupt due to the heat. My question is are the mufflers under the paint stainless and if so could the paint be removed to expose only the stainless muffler which would look much better than the paint peeling off in sections? If not does anyone offer a direct replacement stainless muffler(s) that could replace the factory dual mufflers on the '07 V6? By the way this is a great site and I have been spending a lot of time here recently. Thanks for the help.

The muffler is made of metal stainless steel. The black paint on there is for protection? It flakes off after a while. I don't know why there is a need for it though since aftermarket mufflers are all stainless unpainted.

I don't think it's much for protection as much as it is for stealth.
