Some pics on chopping springs... and a little update on the SBC

* I honestly don't know what super long term effects chopping springs will have - I don't know if you will mess up your car - but this is just information... don't do anything to your ride you can't afford to pay and fix if something goes wrong *

Anyways... Hey guys - so we have such a hot-headed debate on TN about spring cutting... Is it so bad??? What is it going to do to my car??? How much lower will it make me??? Does cutting springs mean I don't like girls anymore>>>

While I can't answer all of these questions - I decided to cut up some springs for the camry... I sold my coilovers and went back to springs/struts - I have been riding on ksport springs to test them out and the drop in the back is pretty sick, but the overall stance is about the most uneven i have ever seen (tuck rear/3 finger front)

I got a great deal on some sprint springs - and we had an extra set of 2 from Alex lying around the shop - so I figured time to expirement - and time to cut some shit up

Here are some pics of the front spring springs - they are in left to right order from stock height - 1/2 coil chopped - full coil chopped... (note I cut off the bottom of the springs - where they sit on the strut)

I did that so you could see how different the heights of the springs look when you cut them up...

Now I thought cutting a full coil off was REALLY too much Reason being when i set the spring back on the perch of the strut... it really wanted to fall off the bottom side of the strut when i put pressure on it... this worried me - so i stuck with the springs where I cut 1/2 a coil off... NOTE - I have talked to people that say they have chopped off a full coil and been fine - I am just saying personally - I did not feel real good about it...

i am not going to cut the rears - since the car is low ass back there anyways

Also - when I chopped the springs - I tried to grind down the ends such that they lined up with the perches like the stock springs did... I think this will help them sit better - if not it added some piece of mind for me

Anyways - give me a few days/weeks to let them settle - and then i will get my allignment done (since i f'd up the car in that little wreck anyways) and I will update you all on the looks... Because of this - I don't really have any full car pics at the moment - I am pretty happy with the little extra drop in height though - maybe it will ride like shit though when i finally get the car moving, but until then I don't know...

so yeah - my car still isn't driving haha...

After I had Carl help me fix all the suspension stuff from the curb incident - MY RADIATOR BLEW UP! not more than 5 min. after I had the whole car put together... I am not sure why - probably old age and what not - but a hairline crack in the top plastic of the radiator did it in... so my car sits like this ATM

That is why I have had all this time to play around with suspension - plus working at speed-source I get to have acess to the car a bunch...

But have no fear - new radiator time is here

I bought an aluminum visteon racing radiator for a 2G eclipse - we are making custom tabs to mount it on the car - and then welding a fill neck on the top so I can put radiator fluid in it!!! Should be pretty nice when all done

i also decided to mount up all of my gauges so I could see them nicely - here is a sneaker pic on that

Anyways so that is that - hopefully the car will be driving soon - while it is awesome to wacth the car collect dust - I would rather fly through the dust on the streets

Is that the P880PRS I see in there?

Anyway, nice, and I can't wait to see what happens.

You F'in tool...... Nate's car will outdo yours anyday

Chopping the springs should be fine dude, ive seen it done before, and a coil or so doesn't hurt. Of course, legally is a different story, but meh...you a turbo 5s in there anyways hahaha.
I decided to go the heat treating route with my rears. Heating until soft...setting in desired height and then cooling off. Havn't had a problem at all with them, and ive been running them for nearly 2years.
Car's looking good buddy, i really like your steering wheel.

hehe yeah i am a pretty big ricer when it comes to suspension... i have run full coilovers before, along with springs from intrax/ksport/sprint and then compared with rides in my friend's cars who have had whitelines/H&R's/vogtlands/eibachs... maybe more haha

I have had or been in the majority of suspension options for the gen3 - so ricing out is not really a problem, more like getting the perfect height with whatever setup i desire at any time is

Well fuck man - how was i supposed to know you were mounting gauges there... anyways I posted pics first so I have the credit mwahahah... For all I know you could be running to your garage doing it now

but really - that is crazy - i have EGT - oil press - oil temp - volt - boost - aem wideband - fuel pressure under hood... such similar choices in gauges... guess that is because they are the best

good call on not chopping an entire coil

jeff used to run the sbc on intrax and kybs with a full coil cut. I recently picked his old suspension (before his coilovers) up with ideas of just swapping out my fronts for the summer to get a lower drop. But after seeing how they sat (or should I say- didn't sit) in the sping mounts and how, if the suspension was ever to get much extension, the spring would literally pop out of place, I had to forego the idea.

here's a pic of how they DON'T sit properly and can easily pop out....I have no idea how jeff ran on these...the ride must have been ass too...

I cut a half coil off my tein s-techs and with tokico struts it rides fine and I love the stance. Say what you want it is fine. Under full extension there is no spring popping out either.

Thanks for the info. pussies and 97...

I feel the same way you guys do

I was just trying to show the boards a size comparison - so those who have never cut springs before could actually see the changes in spring lenths
