2nd Generation SV21 Dodgy Air Conditioning

Hey guys,

As mentioned, I have an SV21 1992 camry and Im having some troubles with the AC. For starters, the first two settings dont work at all and every so often I get leaves etc blown through.

The other day, I also noticed that even though the AC was off, I could feel heat being emitted from the AC ducts (I had previously used the heater).

Also, last night, I had the heater going, but after a while, the central vents started blowing out cold air. what the...?

Is there anyway I can clean out the AC filter or something? How do I access the AC?

thanks

Two of the resistors in the blower motor resistor pack are busted. Replace it (its a simple screw and electrical connection after you get the part)

Make sure the screens at the bottom of the windshield are clean and still there for the leave problem.

Some air will come through the vents while the car is moving unless the a/c is set to recirculation - and the engine bay often heats the air coming through there a bit.

for the warm/cold issue, check your cooling system... there may be air bubbles in it.

There is no filter for the gen2 Camry, only those grates at the base of the windshield. Most of the A/C components (blower resistor, blower motor, etc) is in the passenger footwell.

cool, thanks for that.

Just, where would I be able to get the resistors? Im assuming that they arent just the regular electrical resistors?

Its a special pack that is specific for the car. You can get it from the dealer or junkyards...

If you have access to the right parts, you can replace them with 'normal' resistors, but they are low-value high-wattage types that are hard to find. You may also be able to solder the resistor(s) that broke back together for a temporary fix.

I managed to find the resistor pack after staring at a relay for 5 minutes before realising the pack was next to it :P Sure enough, the thinest coil had a clean snap in it.

Just came back from pick and payless (auto wrecker) and got the resistor pack for free. Incidentally, I also picked up a right headlight because my current one has a hole in it

Unbelieveable how many dead '92 camry's there are lying around.

So anyway, thanks for your help guys! AC runs perfectly now Hopefully this pack won't bust anytime soon.

Why is it that they use such tiny, fragile components? Why not just a solid resistor? ah, well, as long as its fixed Im happy .

14 years and how many miles later, and you are calling it fragile? Its in the airflow there to stay cool and last a long time. Not up to usual Toyota standards, but not bad considering the fix was free for you.

I dont know why in your city, but it is really hard for me to find a generation 3 camry in any junk yard. I have to actually call 5-10 junk yards to see if they actually have a generation 3 camry.
