Gen5 Why 215/60/16?

I have OEM 205/65/15 steelies on my Gen 5.5 I4. i have some 16" wheels collecting dust in the garage, which i will install later when i get some new tires.

just from observation of other Gen 5's, OEM tire sizes for a 16" wheel are 215/60/16. but that makes the overall size a bit larger. using an online tire calculator, I found that a 215/55/16 tire will give the closest size to my current setup (205/65/15).

i wanna go with the 55 becuz it makes the least difference in overall tire size. plus, the shorter sidewall is a bonus. so why is stock tire size for 16" wheel a 65 sidewall? jus curious...

The 205/65 or 215/55 is just a ratio to describe the hight and width. You can change it but just remember that it chages the accuracy of your speedometer.

right. i'm jus saying that a 215/55/16 tire is the closest match in size to my OEM 205/65/15 wheel. thus, the speedometer would be the most accurate. this is in contrast to the 215/60/16 OEM tire toyota uses for 16" wheels. with the latter tire, the speedometer reading is less accurate. ironic, since its the OEM plus 1. jus my 2 cents...

My guess is that they would calibrate the speedometer appropriately on the models that have 16" wheels.

215/55 16 has a diameter of 25.3in
205/65 15 has a diameter of 25.5in

^^ You will NOT have to do a thing to the speedo! This is like no difference. Your speedo will read exactly the same!

The 16in toyota wheels for camrys here in Aust comes in 205/60 16

215/60/16 is the tire size for the SE model

I will assume you have an LE or below if you have 205/65/15

The "recommended" 16 inch wheel for the LE or below is 205/60/16

Just because they put the othe rsize on the SE model, does not automatically = the best up size for the LE model.

This size is not exactly right either, with a diameter of 25.7in

yup, I have an '06 LE. i dont know wut tire they would put for a 16" LE wheel. that's why i'm thinkin of goin with the 215/55/16 tire, becuz its the closest match to my stock tire size (205/65/15).

MAN!!! the Gen 6 came out only 2 months after i bought my Gen 5. if i knew that ahead of time, i wouldve not had any problem waiting for the new style. and the '07s come with 16" wheels standard?! oh why?!
