4th Generation stalling after pumping gas

yeah basically the thread name says it all, so anyone have any clues to why this is happening? it never stalls unless after i pump gas so its not really an annoyance, just trying to find the source.

What kind of tests have you tried? have you tried pumping a very small amount of gas vs large amounts. Does it make a difference? Have you remove the gas cap and put it back on, does that make it stall, etc, etc, etc.

tried everything, i came to the conclusion its incredibly random.

sometimes it'd stall sometimes it'd idle so low that it might stall but doesnt.

any clues anyone?

I know the check engine light would come on if the gas cap is not on tight. So I'm wondering if it has anything to do with a pressure thing. But not too sure, sounds like a tricky one, especially if it is random

When you get gas do you fill it up and top it off? If so check the evap canister.

My 98 Camry will do the same thing....if I leave the car running while pumping gas it will start idleing real low then sputter alittle and eventually quit. I have only had the car about a month now but I have had this happen twice....both times with A/C on(if it makes a diff I dont know). I just assumed it was a pressure thing like mentioned before.... Once I get done pumping the gas I can get in and it starts right up and does fine.

does it stall and then start right back up when you turn it over, or does it act like it is out of gas?

And it is not good to have the car running when your pumping gas. It can damage your car, and it is also a potential hazard.

Hell...been leaving cars running for the 20+ years i been driving.......I figured my Camry would be no different. But I guess it is...it will slowly idle down and quit while I am pumping gas...then will start right up when I get done and run normal.

Guess I will just have to remember to shut it off from now on...but on 95-100+ days here in the muggy south I sure like to keep my A/C cooling the car off every chance I get...LOL

I want to beat people when I see that... Gas is a vapor not a liquid...it goes boom-boom! It also is rude...I do not want to smell anyone's exhaust.

I would check your fuel filter, maybe your pump, but first see if you are pumping in water from the station. Lets say a Tanker just fill the stations main tanks....they will kick up water that is on the bottom of the main tanks. ie: you get water with your gas.

Do this:

Go to Mobil.
On an empty tank, empty two bottles of fuel injector cleaner, right?
Then full up your tank with premium gas (89) and put the pump back.
Start your Camry as the fuel injector will clean up any clogs. It's very possible you need clog cleaning.

Check your fuel filter too. When's the last time you had a tune up and oil change?

Gasoline was a liquid last I checked But I agree it is the vapors off the gas that can go boom-boom ....but say you are pumping gas and a car drives up...how are they suppose to get to the pumps without their car running when they pull up?? Same effect in my opinon ... As far as exhaust ...what do you do at red lights when someone is infront of you ?? Turn your fan off inside ?? or get out and tell them they are rude for leaving thier car running while you are behind them.

This wasnt posted to start a argument...in fact I didnt even start this thread... I was just letting the guy know mine did the same thing and was wondering why.

Rant off

Tell me you made a typo??? Tell me you don't leave the car running while pumping gas.. and why would you, unless you've just commited a bank robbery.

It's kinda dangerous to have your car running and pumping gas. Besides, I dont think gas stations allow you to do that unless they are not aware.

Any cars sold in the US after 96 have to have OBDII in them. and part of OBDII is the evap system that is sopposed to prevent pollution by stopping hydrocarbons from escaping into the atmosphere and a major part of the system is the gas cap. thats why if your OBD system is operating properly you will get a "check engine" light if your car is running without the gas cap properly installed.
