65 mph gear or bearing noise

My 2001 automatic Camry with the 4 cyl. makes a whind or howl at 65mph. It goes away at speeds either faster or slower. I can't tell if it is from the front or rear of the car or which side but it is very loud! It does not seem much different when cornering or accelerating or decelerating at or through 65 mph. The dealer had said that it was a bearing but it would be hard to determine which one at this time and costly. I haven't checked the rear wheel bearings but they would be fairly cheap I would think. Also I would think cornering would change the noise a lot in a regular cone and cup bearing but I wonder if the front wheel drive bearings noise aren't affected by cornering so much? It has pretty much stayed the same for the last 8,000 miles. Anybody have a similiar experience?

my 98 camry (auto, 2.2l) just recently (about 4 months ago) started making a very slight but distinct howl right at 130km/h (81mph) .. and slower or faster it goes away.. but i think its in the tranny.. try turning overdrive on and off with the o/d button on the side of the shifter to see if that changes the sound. if it does, its somewhere in the tranny.. if it doesnt it could still be in the tranny, differential, driveshafts or bearings somewhere.

A bad wheel bearing can be tough to pin down. Click on the link to gain more info on checking bearings. Keep in mind the info is for a different make/model car, but the testing is the same.

The was also a recent post on this same subject.

A differential can also howl and loudly. When you hear the howl, let up on the gas to take the load off the differential and see if it goes away. If it goes away, you could be right. A bad wheel bearing will keep making noise.
