Gen5 Lookin for pre-existing holes in the firewall

to stick a little wiring from the engine bay into the cabin. It's about an 18 gauge cable so nothing huge, the battery is located at the front left of the car, but i think it'd be easier to get a wire through somewhere on the passenger side of the firewall since there's no steering column to work around.

so, just looking for what holes in the firewall i could just poke into and where it comes into the cabin. hoping i don't have to dismantle too many pieces aside from pulling up the carpeting.

any advice would be much appreciated. thanks in advance.

Just follow wires from the engine bay and see how they get into the cab and from where. There has to be a grommet where they go through somewhere.

the question is... which side do you prefer the wiring to be on? and how far into the cabin?

i have run some wiring through where the hood latch release cable goes through which is just under and behind the internal fuse panel. its a little involved to get through to there, but if thats where your item that needs the wiring will be placed, it'll be perfect.

to access the exterior side of the hole, you will need to remove the front driver side splash guard. once you do that... you should see a black coated cable running along; that is the hood latch cable. to access from the inside, you will need to remove the door sill, the kick panel on the left side underneath the steering wheel, and (to make things easier) the panel/dash underneath the steering wheel.

like i said... its pretty involved. just a suggestion

I have a 1/o cable running to my cabin and here is what I did... There are two areas on the firewall that have a large rubber circle that has the car's wirring running through it. One on the driver side & one on the passenger side. Simply pierce a hole next to the current wire bundle that is smaller than the cable you are going to use. Then feed it through. The rubber hole being smaller than the cable, seals itself around the wire and insulates any unwanted air holes.

It is the one your speaking of. I used the other side so I am not exactly sure, but more than likely, you will have to go behind the glovebox. There is only one screw on the side of the box near the pass. door. Then you just push in the sides and release the box to open more. It's the same way you would change your in-cabin air filter. If you haven't done that yet, be prepared. When you see what you have been breathing.....well let's say that you wont ever forget it again.

ok i removed the glove compartment and saw that air filter thing. i haven't actually yet seen the grommet from the inside because it appears to be up behind the air filter device.
is it safe to just jab a hole into the grommet from the outside and hope it doesn't hit anything important on the way into the cabin?

The rubber is not very thick, so you can use an awl or even a sharp pen as to not damage anything on the inside. First start by using the eraser end of a pencil, and push around the rubber where you want the cable to go from inside the engine compartment. The rubber is normally very pliable. If it feels fairly clear with the eraser, you are probably good to go. Try using a coat hanger to poke the hole. You then can use the hangar to see whare it is from inside the cabin, as well as feed the wire through the hole.
